Photography – September 2024

In August I decided I needed “a thing” to take up my time. I went all in on analog photography. Here are some favorites from September. 2024. I have a lot of pictures and I’d like to continue writing about them vs just posting on social media without context.

September 2024 – Central Park, NYC
Pentax 17 – Harman Phoenix 200

This was the picture that started it all as far as I’m concerned. I house-sat for my sister in NYC for a week in September. I didn’t know anyone in the city so I went to a Kodak event on a whim. It was a beautiful day and we walked around Central Park. The Pentax 17 was still new to me at the time so I got mixed results throughout the trip. This was also my first time using Harmon Phoenix. It handled beautifully in the bright light and I continue to like the film quite a bit.

September 2024 – Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Brooklyn
Holga – Kodak Gold 200

On the same trip, I visited the Brooklyn Botanic Garden with my holga. True to form, most of the pictures were blurry and hard to look at. However, this one was magically in focus. I don’t know if I’ll ever achieve another picture this crisp out of that camera. (Also, at the time of writing, the holga is broken.) I love the dreamy quality a plastic lens can give and I also find it unbelievably frustrating. Sometimes I think about giving up the holga but pictures like this keep me coming back.

September 2024 – Bushwick, Brooklyn
Pentax 17 – Harman Phoenix 200

I asked Reddit where I should go in NYC and someone suggested a lab in Bushwick called Photodom. The subway trip was forty minutes from where I was staying. It’s a cute space at the top of an epic stairwell. I bought some of their in house film and then proceeded to get lost wandering around the neighborhood. I like this picture of the Photodom stairwell. It was completely unplanned and a pleasant surprise when I started looking through the negatives.
